Woodware - Shaker Cards

This weeks challenge at Woodware is to make a shaker card. I have never actually made one of these before. So this was definitely a challenge, which I really quite enjoyed.
For my main image I chose this gorgeous Stampendous stamp CRP169 "Snow Bird". I bought this a while ago and had intended to use it for some Christmas cards, but forgot I had it. So when I found it the other day whilst looking for something else I thought it would be perfect for my shaker card!!

This is such a cute design and I am sure it will be well used in the future. So here is my shaker card :

 I decided to make mine into an easel card. I stamped some swirling snowflakes onto the acetate that I used to create the front of the shaker component.

To carry one the theme of snow I used some chunky white and shabby blue Frantage embossing powder for the shaker bits!. I also threw in a bit of multi-crystal glitter for a bit of sparkle. 

I stamped the bird lightly onto the oval inside as a place to write your birthday message. And I stamped the branch and berries from the main stamp to the strip that supports the easel card.

Woodware - Black and White

Our theme this week is "Black and White". There have been some stunning samples on the Woodware blog this week. For my card I have used a new Woodware stamp designed by Jane Gill JGS329 Teasels Flower Heads. This striking design works well for this black and white theme.

I used a script stamp to create a soft background by inking up with black ink and stamping lightly twice onto scrap paper and using the third stamping for a faded look. 

I split the stamped image into 3 panels and layered them onto black card. A nice sentiment and a few pearls finish off this card.

Woodware - Sketch Challenge 30

This week at Woodware we have another sketch challenge. This is a nice simple sketch and perfect for a DL card. My interpretation is very simple. 

I needed a sympathy card in a hurry and thought this lay-out would work well. Sadly I seem to have needed quite a few sympathy cards of late.
Anyway here is my card:

I used a Stampendous cling stamp CRR164 called "Tree Poem". 

I love to use my stamps in different ways. So for my main image I turned the stamp on it's side and stamped along the edge of my rectangular piece of card stock. This  gave we a line of shrubs onto my sunset.

 I just added a stamped bird and the sentiment. Job done!!
Mine was a very simple take but some of the other girls have made much more elaborate cards than me. Check them out on the Woodware blog.
Thank goodness it's friday. I need a lie-in!!

Woodware - Retirement

Our DT at Woodware were given a couple of weeks off over Christmas and New Year. Which is just as well as I did very little crafting over that period. I got my sewing machine out instead and caught up on a few jobs that had been outstanding for some considerable time!! 
Whilst we enjoyed the festive period Dorothy was busy posting sample cards using some of the new Woodware stamps that have just been launched. So it was nice to sit back and see those.
I did not have anything in my stash that shouts out retirement so I decided to use one of my Stampendous stamps CRR 187 Train Postcard. Although released as a Christmas stamp I have mainly used it for other occasions and thought it would lend itself well to a "retirement theme"

The colours did not come out great due to my lack of daylight hours just now in whic to photograph samples.  But I used a mixture of blues and greens inks blended on white card stock before stamping the image twice using black ink. I cut out the oval train image on one piece to layer onto the background postcard. The typed works were computer generated and cut out.

The leaves were punched from scraps I had left over and the edges sponged with black to make them stand out. They conveniently cover the holly branch stamped underneath!!

The textured blue background card was gently swiped with a navy blue ink pad to pick up the texture. And I finished off stamping my sentiment (Magenta) onto a luggage label tag and tied with a bit of baker's twine.

Woodware - Good Luck

This week at Woodware we were asked to make a "Good Luck" card. When I was looking through my Woodware stamps I came across this old clear set designed by Francoise called "Looking Good" I am still up to my armpits in Christmas cards and wrapping paper, so I wanted something quick and easy.

So this is what I did with it. I coloured most of the images apart from the tie which was paper pieced. The sentiment was computer generated as I could not find any Good Luck stamps. This is a handy little set which I have used before in a paper piecing challenge.

I have used this set for birthdays too,so definitely a handy one to have. 
Well that is the last Woodware post from me for a couple of weeks. Dorothy (our team leader) has kindly given us a fortnight off. She will be posting some samples made from the new Woodware stamps during the two weeks. So remember to check out the blog to get a sneaky peak of what's to come!!
Hope you all have what you wish for this Christmas. I will settle for a couple of glasses of wine and a dose of "Call the Midwife" and "Downton Abbey". I am away now to make a few last Christmas cards!! Reminder to self ... start in July next year!!

Christmas Meltdown

Well I had my annual Christmas meltdown yesterday. My husband Graham is still recovering from a hernia operation and is neither use nor ornament at the moment. It's not his fault of course, but in my stressed and tired state my brain won't quite accept this. After a morning of Christmas shopping, supermarket shopping, cleaning and making soup I decided to haul the tree and decorations out of the loft. A pleasant hour or so dressing the tree and I would be all relaxed ready for Strictly Come Dancing ......
or so I thought. But due to a bad design I could not get the tree to stand straight. Two hours later I am still trying to fix the base. When I eventually managed to fix that my new tree lights did not have an end where I could start winding them from the top of the tree down. They were in a loop and I managed to get in a complete fankle trying to get them on the tree. Probably designed by a man. By this time I sat on the floor and burst into tears. I was ready to throw the whole lot, tree and all in the bin and cancel Christmas..... My thoughts go out to stressed women every where tasked with the responsibility of organising Christmas.
By the time I get to Christmas Day and get the dinner on the table, I think I will go to bed and sleep until Boxing Day!! I think I am definitely becoming a grumpy old woman.

I thought I would share this card with you. It was a friends birthday this week and she has a little house rabbit called Millie. So this old Penny Black stamp seemed to be the perfect choice!! It was nice too to make something other than Christmas.

Looking forward to sitting down now for the Strictly results show. The dancing last night was brilliant. They are all so good!!

Woodware - Sketch 29

We have a sketch challenge this week at Woodware. The good thing about a sketch challenge is that you don't have to worry about your lay-out, that is already thought out for you. I love to see what the other girls in the DT come up with.

Here is the sketch: 

I have used the sketch as a base for another Christmas card. Here is my take on it :

Apologies for the poor quality of the photos. It's dark when I leave for work and dark when I get home so not great for photographing cards. 

The background panels were all stamped using Stampendous stamps. The main image, evergreen sprig and pine cone all come from a jumbo cling set.

The main image was made using a brush less watercolour technique with brush markers. Simply apply the pens direct onto the stamp and spritz lightly with water. So quick and effective but still one of my favourite techniques!!

I wanted a card for an elderly neighbour who lost her husband this year. I still wanted to give her a handmade card as I know she loves to receive them, but wanted something a little less jolly!! Hopefully this will fit the bill.

We are having our departmental Christmas get together and Secret Santa tomorrow. I am desperately trying to get into the mood but it's not working!! I think I am definitely becoming a grumpy old woman!!

Woodware - Coffee and Cream

Another week already at Woodware. Not quite sure where this week went!! Between work, dogs and looking after my husband Graham after his little operation, it has been a particularly hectic week. So another quick card this week. 

The theme this week over on the Woodware blog is coffee and cream. So I have used the Stampendous cling stamp "Wise Men" in this quick Christmas card.

I created the background by blending shades of soft brown dye inks. Then using a music score background stamp (also Stampendous) I spritzed it with water and stamped onto the brown ink. This lifts of some of the ink to give a lovely soft background. 

The wise men were stamped in a dark brown ink. I added a few highlights with a Sakura clear glitter pen and added some pearls.

To get the cream element I stamped a scroll border down the right hand side then embossed it with Frantage Aged Ivory embossing powder.

The detail on the stamp is lovely and needs very little added to it.

Woodware - Quick Christmas

This week at Woodware our theme is "Quick Christmas". Which is rather appropriate as I left this to the last minute and it was literally a 10 minute card.
I chose the rather beautiful Stampendous cling stamp CRP213 Oh Christmas Tree for my quick card.

I simply stamped with embossing ink onto white card stock and embossed with a detail white powder. This makes sure you can make out the detail of the writing. Then with dye inks I blended over 3 shades of blue from light to dark. This gives a nice night sky effect. Then a few splatters of water to look like falling snow and its done.
Some simple layering and a bit of ribbon and it's done. 

I am going to try this with some other colours like greens and perhaps some soft pinks and lilacs.

Woodware - Sketch Challenge 28

Time for the next sketch challenge over at Woodware this week. This will be number 28. It is a nice simple sketch and as it involved two ovals I decided to incorporate two current favourite Stampendous stamps.

The two Stampendous stamps are Snowy Postcard and Train Postcard. Then sentiment is also by Stampendous and I really like the words. 

I just used the inner oval from each of the two images and stamped them onto card that I pre- blended some blue and brown inks for a quick background.

The background for the ovals was coloured with soft blue and brown inks, softly blended. then I stamped with a pine sprig (also Stampendous). I stamped the first layer with brown ink then over stamped with gold Encore pigment ink and embossed with gold powder.

I quite like the old fashioned, nostalgic feel of this card.

Woodware - Paper Piecing

This week's challenge at Woodware is paper piecing. This is not something I do much of as I hate cutting out fiddly things. So I chose an easy design to paper piece. This Woodware dove lends itself perfectly to this technique. I chose some soft blue and brown winter background papers.

If you are careful you can get several doves from one lot of stamped papers, so quite good if you are batching your cards.

As you can see I added a few pearls and some faux stitching on the background circle. A die cut or punched snowflake finishes off the card.

Well I am back to work today after a great trip to London with my sister. Now I need to get some serious batching done to get my own Christmas cards made!! Every year I say I will start earlier but never do!!

Woodware - Treasured Memories

Our challenge this week at Woodware was set by Christina from A Maze of Memories. As well as setting the theme she has also a tutorial on her blog on how to create a chalkboard effect. I must make time to have a go at that, it looks really effective.

I have been having an on-going clear out over the past few weeks. I keep coming across little things my kids have given me over the years and other mementos from loved ones past and present. So when I so this week's theme that gave me the idea to decorate a box to keep them in.

My box started life as an A4 Manila document box. It was fine as it was but a bit utilitarian. So I gave it a makeover. I painted the whole box with gesso first to prime it. Then a couple of coats of acrylic paint. I also sponged a soft pink on the lid to soften the effect.

On the top of the lid I stamped a panel of paper using various Stampendous stamps. I used a scroll stamp (also Stampendous) around the edges to frame it and embossed it in gold. I then finished off with some frantage powders round the edges of the lid.

The photos aren't great. I was starting to get dark. I am quite pleased with my altered box. And it's nice to have a proper place to store all those little memories.

Talking of memories. My sister and I are meeting up in London on Thursday. It's her 50th birthday soon so we are going to celebrate it together by having a little trip together. So no doubt we will create some nice new memories.

Woodware - Travel

This week at Woodware our theme is travel. I recently got this gorgeous Stampendous stamp of the steam train. Although it is in this year's Christmas catalogue, you can use it any time of year. So I thought it would fit the travel theme perfectly.

CRR187 Train Postcard

I went with an autumn theme and used a leaf stamp and some travel post marks from a Stampendous clear set of travel stamps I have.

To cover the holly part of the image I die cut a leaf from Woodware copper foil. I love this product. It makes your die-cuts look really special. I also cut a couple of fancy corners to finish off.

The travel quote is another Stampendous cling, and one I have used before. 

I think this stamp is a great one for masculine cards as well as Christmas and travel. There are lots of other great ideas on the Woodware blog this week. Pam our DT member from the States did a great card using a Stampendous cling motorbike. I will be definitely adding that to my collection!!

Woodware - Circles

Over on the Woodware blog this week there have been some great ideas using circles. All the team have come up with completely different ideas. I made another Christmas card this week using circles. It is always fun trying to come up different ways of using a set of stamps. So here is my take on the circle theme:

 I used a set of clear Stampendous stamps for most of the images, although the little cottage was a separate Stampendous cling stamp but goes really well with the first set. I stamped all the images in black ink then punched out the circles. After colouring in I used a glue pen to outline each circle and covered in glitter.

Family and friends are the circles that mean most to us and so this was the idea behind the card. I think I might make a few of these!!
It was a lovely day here today. The trees are looking stunning in their autumn colours. I must try and get some photos before they loose their leaves.

Woodware - Sketch 27

I am last up this week at Woodware for our latest sketch challenge. This is the sketch we were given:

I decided to go with a Christmas theme for my take on this sketch. And both stamps I have used are new. The lovely background script is a new Woodware stamp. The tree is from Stampendous and I just love tree stamps (So I just had to have this one!!)

The Woodware Christmas script was stamped and embossed in gold. For the trees I sponged a background first before stamping the trees. I didn't think the card needed much else so I just stamped and embossed a border down one side of the background paper and added some organza ribbon and a bow.

I know these are both stamps that will get well used this year. I hope to make a batch of cards this weekend to start my own Christmas box. If I have any peace between grocery shopping, cleaning the house, dogs and going looking at Wedding dresses. Catriona and I are going for her first look for THE DRESS this Sunday!!! No doubt there will be a little tear when I see my baby in a wedding dress!!

Woodware - Monochrome Christmas

Well folks this week at Woodware we were set with a retailer challenge by Janet from Craft Range in Burnley Lancashire. She wanted people to share their monochromatic Christmas ideas. So these are actually the first two Christmas cards I have made this year. As always I seem to be way behind everyone else!!
I chose this lovely new Woodware single stamp JGS176 Nordic Dove and Branch designed by Jane Gill. I love the simplicity if the design and the fact that it lends itself to a variety of techniques.
The first sample is using a resist :

I chose several shades of blue pigment cat's eye ink pads to go over my resist.

I then finished with a light blue dye ink over the top with then allowed me to splatter some water to make it look a little more distressed.

My second sample is more a vintage look.

I stamped the dove twice, once onto white card and the second on to Kraft card and used a paper piecing technique. I added a little colour with a paint brush to highlight the swirls on the dove.
These were two very simple cards to batch and I hope I have given you a couple of ideas of how to use this lovely stamp.

Woodware - Alter it or Recycle it!!

This week our Woodware challenge is to either alter something or re-cycle something. I had recently bought some calendar tabs with the intention of making some desk calendars for Christmas gifts. So I thought I would make a start with one for this week's challenge.
I have an old chipboard book that I have never used and as the pages are nice and thick, they make a great base for the calendar.
I used the page as a template to cut out a piece of gold card for the background. This was stamped and embossed with gold. The stamp is an old Stampendous leaf border.

I also ran the gold pad all round the edges and embossed that as well to finish off the raw edge. I then chose a stamp for my main image and stamped it over a sponged setting sun. A little matting and layering and your done! 
I have an easel die which allows you to stand things up, but you can quite easily make your own stand or hanger if you prefer.

Normally I would cover the back with a nice piece of paper to finish off....especially in this case when there are holes in the back!!

I was down at Port Sunlight this weekend with some good friends for the Happy Stampers show. Although I was feeling a bit under the weather I really enjoyed it. Bought some lovely new things, saw some great demos and also met up with a couple of other friends. Now I am cuddled up on the sofa with a cosy blanket with a hot toddy writing my blog post.
